Pakowanie/ Packing

Przeglądam przewodniki w Internecie i odliczam godziny. Będę mieć milsze wspomnienia :) A potem Sintra, plaże Algarve i Alentejo. Pyszne jedzenie... Caipirinha w Bairro Alto...

I'm at work. I don’t feel like doing anything. I can’t concentrate. 2 days before holidays people shouldn’t be supposed to work, as it is totally unproductive. All I can think about us my holiday, taking plane at 9.30 p.m. tomorrow and arriving in Lisbon at midnight. I’m searching for some guides on the Internet, reading some touristic information and counting hours that separate me from being in Portugal. I already was in Lisbon, in May 2008, so it is not the excitement of discovering unknown city that make me so impatient. But as for some reasons I don’t have great memories about my last trip to Portuguese capital, I am glad to go back there with my Portuguese namorado and change that. Afterward I’ll have but good memories associated with this charming city. And then we’ll create new memories for my trip to Sintra, Algarve, Alentejo, where I haven’t been before.

So trip to Portugal in few words: delicious food... caipirinha in Bairro Alto... pasteis de Belem... beaches... sun...Don’t need no more, especially in the good company :)
Today I have to pack, to iron, short skype conversation with my family, cause I don’t plan to spend too much time on-line during my 12 days stay in Portugal.

Fortunately coming back to reality shouldn’t be too harsh, as I’m coming back on Tuesday morning (at 7 am, and I’m supposed to start working at 9), but on Friday Celina is coming to visit me for the whole 3 days. And then Kasia with Kuba, so thanks to visits of friends from Poland, I should survive somehow till Nuno is back in Bucharest.

Vy gavarit'e pa-russki?

Zamiast kogoś bardziej doświadczonego, ja- raczkująca dopiero we wszystkich procedurach i kontaktach.

Smaczki językowe z angielskiego Rosjan: „Good afternoon!”- nagłówek maila z godziny 9.40 rano, „Your address has left Radu”- nie ma to jak poprawny szyk zdania, „You speak Russian?” no comment, „Thanks, I will wait Radu”.

In my company, in the Romanian center things seem to be made without any logic in them. I only started working last Monday (till today it has been 9 days in total). Anyway, I was the only one in our team to listen what our TL had asked us and I added the privileges for the application for all countries we have in our region (EE & CIS, Russian Federation, Eastern Europe & Balkans). As soon I added them and had them approved, I regretted ever doing it, cause it turned out that I have to be back-up for Radu, when he is on holidays. Nobody more experience, but me who know the basic things. So his customers are supposed to contact me with important cases, but of course important may have a different meaning for them. Of course, in 99% of the cases I have no idea what they want from me and I just forward their e-mail to right people who are able to help them with their issues. Besides, they all expect me to speak Russian. Yesterday one guy called me and spoke in Russian, so I kindly informed him I didn’t speak that language and asked him politely to switch into English. He was kind of angry and surprised and answered: „How is it possible you don’t speak Russian if you work with Russian customers?!”. Today, similar situation, this time by e-mail. Some girl with big effort wrote 3 phrases in English, out of which one was "Do you speak Russian?".

Some phrases from e-mails Russian customer, which made me laugh a bit: "Good afternoon!" – the greeting in one email sent at 9.40 am, "Your address has Radu Left" –very funny word order, "You speak Russian?” that I won’t comment comment, "Thanks, I will wait Radu”.
Fortunately, when I am on holidays, next Wednesday, my back-up will be Roma, the current collector in Poland, so there won’t be any communication problems.

Praca/ Work

Finally I started working two weeks ago. So I assume it is high time I wrote something about the tasks and things I have to do. Last Tuesday I got a list of customers, a short introduction about Poland’s particularities. And I was supposed to be ready to start, to write e-mails or call customers to find out what was happening with overdue invoices. How exciting it sounds, right? Besides, I was provided only with 3 contacts to customer and all the rest e-mails/ telephone numbers I had to find out somehow. When I start thinking that it is what I am going to do during next 13-14 months, I get a bit scared. Cause it is just too monotonous for me. On the other hand, fortunately, I know exactly when I want to quit, so I guess the time passes faster when I know the deadline. And at least I will have the chance to stay working in one company for more than one year, which can be quite important later on. Well, we just have to figure out what we want to do next. Nuno went to Portugal last week and it seems he got quite nostalgic, as he starts talking in a shy manner that maybe we should try our luck in Portugal. We’ll see.

At the moment I am focused on counting the days till I’m in Lisbon on holidays, then Sintra, Algarve and Alentejo.... I just can’t wait to go there. And the waiting seems forever, as I am also all alone in Bucharest, as Ilona went to Poland for prolonged weekend. Maybe I will go to expat meet-up today with Iva, cause she also goes away for the weekend, for some music festival in Slovakia. So it seems that during the weekend there will be my, myself and probably a TV.

Karaoke party

On Friday night I did nothing. I watched some episodes of a series. Those who know me well are well aware that I’m a series junkie, and when I start watching some show, I just can’t stop. Normally with Nuno we just watch movies, so now that he is gone, I’m back to my favourite addiction. I found a new medical series (Miami Medical) and in less than two days I watched 13 episodes, although let’s be honest, it is not Greys. But I just couldn’t help it and watched the whole seazon, glued to the screen.

On Saturday I went to a B-day party at Iva’s place(two of her Romanian colleagues had a birthday). We played karaoke and mimes (guessing game involving pantomime), which as Ilona told me are the must at the parties thrown in Admita Gardens (luxurious residential complex where Iva lives, check out the link). It seemed that the party was girls only (at the beginning the only guy was the husband of one of Iva’s friends). Then came Diego, Argentinian, whom Ilona and Iva had met the day before at the concert. He was suppose to come with a friend, but for some change in the plans, he came alone. He seemed little bit scared of crazy half-drunk chicks singing karaoke, but then with time and few drinks he got some courage and was the best player in mimes.

After all the people went home, I stayed up with Ilona, talking till 5 am, and then we slept till 2pm so Sunday was kind of a waste day. At least for me, cause Ilona and Iva managed to go shopping.

And my blogging is quite less intense lately, but it is due to the fact that I finally have started working, so no time to blog at work...

Spotkania z expatrami część druga/ Expat meet-up vol.2

As the last time the expat meet-up got more interesting with time, we decided to give it another shot and went this Thursday to Lipscani to meet some foreigners living in Bucuresti. As Tudor, the organizer stated later on their meet-up group’s wall there were “ attendees: roughly 30 , in 3 successive waves. 3 continents were present, with massive East-European presence appeared later on to reinforce the meet up”. Of course the referral to massive EE presence is about us (Iva, Ilona and me).

We decided to show up later since the last time the beginning of the reunion was kind of akward, as we were the only new attendees. I met with Ilona at 9 pm and we waited for Iva, who was playing badminton in a park. We hadn’t seen each other for some time, so we decided that first we would go to some bar and just talk and later we would join the expats. We chose the bar not neer from the expat meeting so that we could observe them and decide when it was the besttime to go to them. As we were „intimidated” by the Romanian women dominance over expats. Then when almost everybody went we met with those who stayed. As it is stated in the report after this meet-up „everybody left , except Tudor the organizer, L. A. Tudor , Manuela, Simona, Alina’s repat friend who speaks German, 5-second appearance Cosmin, am I missing somebody ? ) when fast-speaking, energy-debordating, accent-changing , Bratislava-born, Slovak style beer-drinking Ivana appeared , accompanied by the poles Ilona and Agnieszka. It seems that women all over the world have a common language when they need to communicate things, and it seems some of them manage a decent number of Slavic languages to confuse Tudor. Having lived in a neighborhood where 144 languages were spoken doesn’t help so much, but “ piva/pivo” sounds the same”.

As you can see the conversation was dominated by Iva, and although there were 2 Polish girls, we were just the bonus to Iva’s presence :P But it was quite an interesting evening... I got back home at 1.30 am so waking up in the morning to go to work was quite a challenge. But since now, for some time I won’t go to other expat meet-ups, as Ilona goes home for the weekend, Iva to Greece, I am on holidays afterward, I could make an exception and get home so late during the work days.

Integracja w hiszpańskim stylu? /Integration in Sopanish style?

Ogólnie nasz team to zbieranina dziwnych ludzi i się z Andą i Rominą zastanawiamy, jakie były kryteria przyjmowania do teamu (oprócz znajomości odpowiednich języków oczywiście). Pewnie się nigdy tego nie dowiemy.

In all the multinational corporations they put emphasis on the integration of the team members. For me it seems bit too superficial, but at least every quarter we have the chance to go to some fancy restaurant. This time we had some problems with deciding where to go as nobody wanted to suggest a place. We talked with Anda that it had to be place when normally we wouldn’t go for the budgetary reasons, but since it is the company who pays... We heard from the French team really nice things about a Spanish restaurant, Sangria, but calling the place a Spanish one was bit of exaggeration, as only 20% of the dishes could be considered really Spanish. But the interior and the patio were just great (check the link) and seafood was tasty (but way too expensive for the amount). But thanks to Anda we tried to many things, cause we shared all the plates. We ate so much that next day I could hardly move and had to eat only a salad for lunch.

So food was nice, but when it came to build relations within the team... Well... not that good, I guess. At some point the conversation was held in Romanian, as Radu was telling stories about his customers (the subject he is only interested in). Our new friend, Robert, has a strange obsession about Portugal and everything associated with it. He thinks he knows more about Portugal than the real Portuguese, not to mention than me. And in general he is kind of strange person. Overall, our team is a mix of weird people working together. Sometimes with Anda and Romina we wonder what were the criteria for choosing the members of EE&CIS team, except the language skills of course. But probably we will never discover it.

Nic nam więcej nie potrzeba, oprócz picia i jedzenia/ We don’t need nothing more, just food and drinks

Nuno wyjeżdża do Portugalii w czwartek, ja dopiero za dwa tygodnie dolecę, a potem znowu 3 tygodnie ja w Rumunii, a Nuno w Porto.

Finally, we had a weekend without any plans, without rushing anywhere, without getting up early. It was nice not to do anything,m not to go anywhere. Nothing happened, so I don’t have anything special to write about.
On Friday we went to pick up the TV from our landlord, who was in Cluj, where he is shooting a new clip. So we went to meet with his wife Cristina, because we didn’t want to wait till Cosmin was back to have TV in our flat. We expected they would give us a smaller, TV with flat screen, and instead there was this huge and heavy Sony TV waiting for us (at least it has good quality, although the screen was having very visible signs of sticky dirtly little hand of our landlords’ 2-years-old daughter). But to put it in the car, and then to carry it to the apartment, was a big challenge. I’ll skip the details, we finally managed, but at some point we lost hope and thought it would be too much to lift it and put it on the table. Cristina gave us a bottle of champagne (Martini, not a cheap one champagne-like-wine), so on Saturday finally we celebrated moving to a new flat.
This weekend we went food shopping, so finally I could show off a bit with mu culinary skills (and prove to Nuno that I know how to cook, I just were too lazy to show it). The result was apple pie with raspberries (served with ice cream), lasagna, and for Sunday breakfast pancakes with raspberries. For Sunday lunch we had a sangria. Cause suddenly it got quite hot (and Nuno is the master in making sangria). Eating so much in just two days had its consequences, so today for lunch I ate just a salad. In my defense I can also add that I’m not turning into some housewife who just cooks and cleans. Nuno is leaving for Portugal on Thursday, I’ll join him only in two weeks, and after the holidays, he will stay in Porto and me in Romania for three weeks. So I have to try to leave a good impression only, so he knows what a wonderful girlfriend he has.
On Sunday we went se see the the World Cup final. Ilona invited us to see it together in some bar, but after eating shrimps she felt bad and canceled. Nuno already made the appointment with Carla, so we couldn’t stay at home and watch the game drinking mojitos (we already had bought rum and mint, for the next time...) Typically for Portuguese people, they wanted to meet at 9, 20 minutes before the game started (Carla was 15 minutes late, no surprise, so it meant we only arrived to bar 5 minutes before the game started). Of course, finding a free table in the downtown, on the World Cup Final, preferably on the terrace was almost impossible. Miraculously, we managed to find a table, we were just lucky.
With Spain winning the final of World Cup, we ended our lazy weekend.

Spotkanie ekspatów/ Expat meet up

Nudniejszą i mniej nudną. I dużo Rumunek. Niestety.

Ilona sent me a link to the meet-up of expats in Bucharest . She was going there with Iva for the 1st time (two of them also met on-line, on some forum for expats) and invited us to go with them. We decided that our plans for Thursday evening (watching some movie) could be replaced for going for a beer in the international company. We were also bit curious to get to know some other people from the expat community in Bucharest, to see from countries they were, where they worked, etc. And we were hoping to meet some nice new people.

Basically I could divide the meeting into two parts. One boring and another less boring. During the first part we were drinking beer and talking with Ilona. Not that talking with Ilona was boring, I was referring to our fisrt impressions towards the new (for us) community of expatriates who were ignoring us. It seemed that they all knew each other quite well, while for us it was a first meet up we attended. Some asked standard questions: what was our name, where we were from, when we came to Bucharest, which company we worked for, etc. Among the people at the meeting, there was Egyptian, German, American, Frenchman, an Italian-looking guy. And many Romanian girls. We thought they were repatriates (the Romanians, who had spent several years abroad and now returned), but most of them were Romanians who wanted to get to know foreigners. And that was pretty visible afterward, were most of the conversations were between a Romanian girl and some foreign guy. Iva left the meeting quite early, we stayed to finish our beer (well, Ilona finished her jasmine tea, as she is strictly following some diet. Unfortunately. Cause for the weekend cooking we have to include only the ingredients she can eat). We were about to leave when French guy, Olivier, started talking with us, and then other people as well. Then some younger people appeared, but still the average age oscillated around 40. We wanted to get back by the metro, so had to leave before 11 pm. We have somehow mixed feelings about whether the expats meet ups are the best place to meet new friends, but we don’t rule out the possibility to go to another one someday in the future.

Zasłony/ Curtains

Nuno pojechał do Ikei odebrać zasłony. I widocznie. A druga, weszła do połowy a potem nagle nastąpiło zwężenie i karnisz utknął.

Nuno went to pick up the curtains at Ikea. After returning home we hung them to see how they looked like. I already wrote about small difficulties we had when we were buying them. I also mentioned how we wanted them to be sewn, folded, sewn in one side, at the top sewn so to have space to insert a curtain rails, lined on the bottom. In a word, nothing complicated. Unfortunately, the service quality in Romania is still embarrassingly low, they managed to screw up such a simple sewing task. Well, Nuno also took the measures badly, so the curtains are a little shorter than they were supposed to be. What did they do wrong at Ikea? The side that was to be lined is uneven, but fortunately it’s not so visible. But the upper seam is really unprofessional. And visible. And what I don’t get why the one curtains looks better than the other. With the uglier sewn we had some problems while inserting the curtain rail. We managed to enter to some point, and then suddenly it got stuck because the curtain was sewn unevenly . And even though we managed to introduce the whole rail (with force) it wrinkles... Not to mention that now it is impossible to open the curtains. I have to buy some ribbons (but I’ll wait till I go to Poland) and if we want to open them, we’ll tie them. And people at Ikea still managed to leave some dirt on one curtain, that looks as if somebody stepped on it and leave a dirty shoe print.
But at least maybe now we won’t wake with the sunlight and this weekend we finally won’t get us so early.

Call

Finally, today I had the call with finance director from Oracle in Poland and two Polish women, from which I’m taking over some of their responsibilities. The conference call lasted little over half an hour and was merely informational. So I really don’t get why it took soooooo long to schedule it (and why it was so necessary in order to start working). It seems that local departments are not really in favour of the centralization of collections activities in the center in Bucharest.

Basically, today’s call was meant for them to get to know my, so I had to present myself, tell few words about my education and work experience. And answer some questions, basically they were interested for how long I had worked in HP (I extended my working there to 6 months). And they asked (I knew that they wouldn’t resist the temptation to ask for that) how it happened that I moved to Romania, as it is not the typical destination for Polish people who usually immigrate to Germany, Ireland, the States, etc. Then they talked about their work experience. I don’t know why, but I got the impression they were underlining a lot how much work experience they had. The FD proudly presented a list of international companies in which she worked. Roma (from who I take over most duties) has been working at Oracle for 15 years, 12 of which as a collector, so it means she has a very close relationship with some customers. It makes working in Oracle even more challenging, in addition to work with Polish language and customers for the first time in my career.

Now, the next step, is to have a one-to-one call with Polish girls, Roma is supposed to hand me over some of her clients and explain the specifics of Polish portfolio. In theory, I should start working on my own in September, which doesn’t seem like an easy task, taking in consideration holidays (mine and girls), specific problems, requirements and exception to the standard procedures in Poland ... But, well, I’ll manage (as if I had any choice :P ). And maybe finally that work experience will help me to figure out what I want to do with my professional life. Any ideas?

Piekarnik/ Oven

A wczoraj wypróbowałam rolki.

In our new kitchen we finally have an oven that works wihout any problems. We only moved this weekend and I already Have used the oven few times. The first attempt was pizza (we bought dought). Pizza doesn’t look very nice on the photos, but was tasty. And fast to make, what counts. Then, I made a salty tart with what I had in the fridge (spinach, ham, tomatoes, mozzarella). This time I made everything myself, didn’t buy the french pastry to use it(but I admit frankly that I hadn’t planned this dinner well enough, cause instead to put dought to the fridge for the time indicated in the recipe, I just pit it for 15 min in the freezer). Next time I will follow the recipe, so it should be even tastier. Yesterday I tried out my roller skills for the first time in I don’t even remember how many years. I met Nuno halfway in his way back home cause he had to return on foot from his work (this time we live bit further from his work, so instead of 5 minute walk it is half an hour one, but in the morning his friend picks him up, but as he usually leaves work quite late, Nuno preferes to walk a bit. But possibly he will have a company car from September). Then we decided to walk to get to know the area next to our new flat. We found vegetable&fruit market, where we bought raspberries (we ate them for the first time this year), so for dessert after dinner I made a fruit salad. The dinner must be sth fast to prepare, so I opted fot pasta baked in the oven.

Then we watched Germany vs Spain game, but it was quite boring, so in the meantime I was checking some culinary blogs for the inspiration for the cooking/baking during the weekend. Nuno ordered apple pie, the second (after my mum’s cheesecake) favorite Polish cake. Apple pie is the best dessert for autumn evenings, and in summer I prefer desserts with seasonal fruits, but I have no choice and will make szarlotka :)

In 5 days, I will be „working” for Oracle for three months already. After the intensive first few weeks of training, the time of boredom at worked has come. I’ve read credit&collection manual, and all other available documents in our departments for the new employees like 5 times. I observed and learned new things from my buddy (the experience girl from French team). Later on, I observer Anda, who is also the new hire but started working some time ago. Later, I did some online trainings available on Oracle’s website. And then I run out of new ideas of what should I do to somehow pass the time at work. Finding yourself a task or something to do when you don’t have actually no responsibilities or duties, is a difficult task. Believe me. I’ve complained few times about that to Ramona, who I really like as a person, but not so much as mu team leader. I told her that there is no theory that I can possibly learn and that I should start applying what I had learned so far. But once she answered me: „ I’m not worried that you haven’t started working, so you shouldn’t neither”. I expected her to have slightly different attitude and wanting me to start asap, cause the girls, whose job I’m taking over will only be working in Warsaw till August. And in the meantime I’m going on holidays, maybe they also. So I kept insisting to have a call and start working. It didn’t change anything. Finally I had my call scheduled for tomorrow, so I hoped my boredom would finish. But Ramona is sick, wasn’t at work yesterday and she didn’t come tomorrow, I don’t know if my call won’t get postponed. Again. And since she took day off on Friday, it is more than probable. We'll see. Fortunately, I have my blog to write, that is why I’ve posted so many posts lately. Probably the blogging will not be that intense when I start to have responsibilities. Which will happen soon, I hope.

Ostatni kontakt z byłą właścicielką/ Last contact with the previous landlady

Ostatnie spotkanie z właścicielką poprzedniego mieszkania rozczarowało mnie i pozostawiło we mnie niesmak.
A ja miałam zamieszkać z koleżanką z pracy.

The last meeting with our ex-landlady disappointed me and annoyed me quite a lot. And it also confirmed what we had suspected, money is the only thing she cares about.
We met with her in the already empty, after moving out, apartment. I already mentioned that it was quite hard to reach her. A few days ago Nuno tried to call her, but she kept rejecting his calls. After some time, she texted him and promised to call him back, which of course didn’t do. So Nuno wrote her back and informed that he wanted to cancel the lease for reasons beyond his control. We simply couldn’t say the truth that we were just tired to rent a studio where all the time something was breaking down and that we found a new apartment, because theoretically, Nuno signed a contract for a period of one year . So we had to come up with some other convincing story. According to our fake explanation, Nuno had a meeting with the manager and was informed that he would be sent to Bulgaria to finish the project which he had started here in Bucharest but which company decided to finish in Bulgaria (Nuno told this story so convincingly, with so many details, that even I would have believed him). As for me, I was suppose to move in with colleague from work. As we had expected that looking for a new place would take more than a month (it took more or less three weeks) and we hadn’t known if we would find anything nice, we informed the landlady about our will to cancel the contract later than it was stated in the lease(instead of giving one month notice, we informed her at two week or so notice). A little late, but we had to be 100% sure that we have a new apartment. So we already kind of had expected that probably we wouldn’t get the whole deposit back. But we were hoping that she would give us back at least the half (at least for the mere fact she totally ignored the need to repair the ceiling, or mould on the kitchen’s walls or some other things that happened in the flat). Well, we were being naive. She only cared about the money and of course didn’t want to give us back not even a small part of the deposit Nuno had paid. Nuno tried to talk to her calmly, using his personal charm, make her compassionate and understanding with out situation, etc. He apologized many times for letting her know so late, but he also emphasize that she had no problems with us as tenants, that we left the flat intact, etc. Even then, she wanted to take advantage of his kindness, saying that because of us, she would loose few rents, that she had to renovate the kitchen (which, she should have done while we were still living there, but nevermind), that she had to use services of real estate agencies again, and wanted Nuno to pay more. No way.

I had to be a bad cop in this whole situation. At the beginning I was just listening to their conversation, waiting for the results. But as she seemed totally ignoring what Nuno was telling her, I intervene. I said that I understood her attitude and way of thinking, but she should understand ours. We informed har bit too late, but on the other hand, we wanted only the half of the deposit, not the whole amount. And she should consider the fact she didn’t bother to repair the ceiling during 5 months (even though she had promised several times to take care of that). And she was only referring to the lease agreement, the conditions, etc.. But the agreement, I answered, had no legal value, wasn’t not legal. The owner insisted that it was correct and legal. How can it be legal when they don’t pay the tax on rent? I tried to repeat my arguments. To which she answered in really poor English (the whole discussion was a challenge, due to the language barrier): „and you? Who are you? You don’t exist”. What was supposed to mean she was just talking to Nuno, as she just had signed contract with him. And she repeated that sentence at least three times which pissed me off.

In the meantime, she tried to bullshit us saying that she wasn’t the owner of the flat, just the administrator. Sure. And that she was sad, but her hands were tied, there was nothing she could do. Sure. Then she was asking many times till when was Nuno staying at the flat" (he wanted to sleep there some nights, cause he has audit next week and will be working till late, and that flat is closer to his work). We had paid till the 15th, so we won’t give back the keys before. And we had to make keys for the entrance downstairs, and no way we gonna give them. And she still expected that we payed the bills for the last month. As if it was happening. Honestly, if we hadn’t had any problems with the flat (if let say the ceiling had been repaired), we would have acted differently. But as she never cared about the quality and the state of the flat. But in the present situation, I didn’t feel as if we were acting improperly. Even my Romanian friends were surprised we hadn’t fought harder for the deposit, because if the contract has no legal value and on the photos I once attached you could see clearly how badly our kitchen looked, the landlady should accept our position. Andreea said that we should talk with her, but this time in presence of some Romanian friend. But Nuno (and in that he reminds me a little bit of my dad) prefers to let it go that to quarrel. He said that he already had expected that she wouldn’t give us anything but her behavior and lack of lass had surprised him a bit.

Przeprowadzka/ Moving out

Musieliśmy kupić zasłony do sypialni.

A poniżej zdjęcie obrazujące ogrom chaosu związanego z przeprowadzką (zrobione w starym mieszkaniu). Zgodnie z obietnicą zamieszczam też zdjęcia z nowego.

So finally the day of moving out came. After having so many problems with finding a new apartment, we were impatiently waiting for the weekend. We already started to pack on thursday evening. I was surprised that during those few months we have managed to accumulate so many things. We had three suitcases full of clothes, then countless packages and boxed with all our belongings. When we leave Romania it should be easier, since we will take only clothes, leaving vacuum cleaner or ironing board behind. Fortunately, Nuno had a car from work, because otherwise I can’t imagine how would we manage to move all the stuff. Still we had to go like 4 times with Skoda Fabia all packed up. Then unpacking took us some time, then planning what to buy in Ikea.

On Saturday, Nuno’s Portuguese collegues from the internship were leaving Romania after six monts. Sergio had his flight at 7 am, and Carla and Bonny in the afternoon, so Nuno offered sto give them a ride. We stopped at their place bit earlier than scheduked, because we wanted to see if any of the things they were leaving would be useful at our new flat. The Portuguese, as usual, were still in the middle of packing& cleaning, but still had time to go for their last coffee on Decebal. In consequence they almost missed their plane, cause we arrived at the airport exactly one hour before the departure. For this they had extra luggage and didn’t want to pay the extra kilos (so typical of them) they told us to wait till they finished the check-in, cause they knew they would leave sth to us, what they of course did. (Carla comes for few days to Bucharest next week, for the audit). Of course, there weren’t any free parking spaces, and when we pulled over next to the exit from the aiport and turned on the emergency lights right, aiport services come strigh away and told us to move from there. So Nuno parked at the departure entrance, where already three Romanian cars were parked illegally and he told another service guy that it was only for five minutes, as he checked whether his unfortunate countrymen had checked-in without problems. He spent there 10 minutes, so this guy from the service were already getting angry and telling me to call and park somewhere else. I wasn’t able to communicate, didn’t have mobile anyway, and no driving license, so couldn’t help him. Fortunately, when he was shouting Nuno came back and we drove. And we could breathe with relief, and have some rest from the adventures with Portuguese.

On Sunday we went to Ikea, which was also an adventure. We had to buy curtains for the bedroom. At Ikea, all curtains ready made were long for 3 meters, and we need to buy ones which had 1,8m. We found a nice material and we found that in Ikea they offered also sewing services. The lady that was working in the curtains&fabric department was probably the most unpleasant saleswoman, which we met in Romania. She didn’t speak a word of English, of course, and to our attempts to explain in "Romanian" or body language what we wanted, she shown no willingness to try to understand. Finally we cut from bolt of fabric the lenght we needed and then we explained how we wanted to have our curtains sewn (we didn’t invent anything too complicated, just said we wanted them the same way they had on the display. We are picking them on Wednesday so we’ll see if they understood us.

And below the picture showing the chaos of moving out (made in the old apartment). And I uploaded photos from the new one as I promised.

Sarmale

I jednej z moich ulubionych.

A w delcie Dunaju serwują wersję rybną, sarmali cu peşte. A podobno w regionie Maramuresz można zjeść, podobno przepyszne sărmăluţe în cuib, są to małe „gołąbki” wkładane kolejno jeden w drugi, każdy z innym farszem (wołowy, wieprzowy, barani).

After some post not related in any way with food, I’m writing again about Romanian cuisine. This post is about sarmale, one of the most popular dishes in Romania. And one of my favourites. Of course, this dish can also be found in other Balkan countries, probably originate from Turkey, from the verb sarmak which mean „wrapping/rolling”, there instead pork minced meat they used the lamb stuffing. However, Romanians still consider it their national dish. Sarmale are similar to Polish gołąbki (stuffed cabbage rolls), but in sarmale it is minced meat that predominates in the filling, not rice. Sarmale can be prepared in two ways. As in Poland, they can be wrapped in cabbage leaves (sarmale în foi de varză murat), but in Romanian version, it is sauerkraut (sour cabbage), not a fresh one . Romanians pickle the whole cabbage, so they can wrap the filling in entire cabbage leaves, and in Poland we only pickle shredded cabbage. However, personally, I prefer the second way of preparing them, more Balkan, rolled into vine leaves (sarmale în foi de vita). Both versions are then simmered in tomato sauce and served with mamaliga, sour cream and small spicy pepper.

I found out that there are several other versions of sarmale, but haven’t tried them. During the lent you can eat sarmale de post, which are stuffed only with rice, spices, without meat. In the region of the Danube Delta, they serve them with fish filling, sarma cu peste. And apparently in the region of Maramureş, you can eat delicious (that is what they say in the Internet) sărmăluţe în cuib. Those ones are small sarmale, one put in the other, each one with a different filling (beef, pork, lamb). I hope that one day we try them, even though apparently they are hard to find in restaurants.

Właściciel nowego mieszkania/ New landlord

Poniżej 2 linki do piosenek (w 2 video, nasz właściciel to ten w środku).

We have a very nice new landlord. He is the complete opposite of our former landlady, who were just coming for 5 minutes, only for money, which she counted three times, sometimes commented on the flowers (that we didn’t forget to water) and leaving she used to ask „everything ok?” She worked for the government, it was difficult to contact her and communicate with her, cause her English was very basic. And she didn’t manage to make our ceiling inn the kitchen repaired in more than 4 months. Our new owner is really cool. He explains it, laughing, that he is more easy going than a typical Romanian, and that he is not really typical representative of the country. When we had to sent him copies of our passports, he sent us email: „So, this is my official mail. I'm very glad that we have some really nice guys [it’s about me and Nuno] staying in our beloved apartment. We hope that will be more than tenant - owner."

Already at the first meeting (cause it was his wife who had shown us the flat), he invited for the barbecue (but on Sunday after a five-hour shopping at Ikea and Carrefour, we were dead tired).
It also turned out that our landlord is a Romanian celebrity. Nuno discovered this by accident, as Cosmin (our landlord) sent the e-mail, and at the footer there were many link to pages on Facebook, Twitter, web site. Nuno was intrigued and entered the site where he discovered that there is a band, Cassa Loco, which is known in Romania (Anda and Romina immediately knew of whom I was talking, and apparently our landlord is the funniest of the trio). The band, from what I realized, makes fun of consumerism in Romania and other things that characterize the modern society. Their last album is called "Mall" and it is about the shopping center, that means, about the place where nowadays real life takes place, according to some people.
Check the following two links to their songs (in the second video, our landlord is the one in the middle).
