Niedziela.
Sunday. I went with Nuno to the airport in the morning, as he had a flight to Barcelona at 9 am.
The day before we saw the posters of Red Bull event, The Flugtad (in German it means flight day, air show), a “flight” contest, in which participants "fly " or "jump" into the water on the flying ma
As I didn’t want to stay in the flat alone, I decided to go to see the show that took place net to the National Library, not far from our place. I was to meet Ilona and Tycek. I went earlier in order to get some nice spot to take some pictures, which was quite a challenge because all the
I was waiting for an hour for the show to start, being squeezed between Romanians and Gypsies, that were smoking and shouting, with horrible techno music that was just irritating me. I just gave up, couldn’t wait more (the show started 2 hours after the scheduled time), I took some photos of the most interesting constructions and went home. Then I saw some jumps on youtube.
Anyway, the whole show was commented on the news and newspapers, thanks to an accident (that was described as “completely stupid” in Bucharest Herald) that happened during the first water jump when a first participant jumped on a piano. 26 years old girl hit her head on the construction when landing in the water and lost consciousness (she fell 6 feet above the water level at about 60km / h speed), after she regained consciousness she waved to the audience, not realizing how serious her condition was. She was immediately taken to the hospital, where it was discovered she had her spine broken and needed to be operated. Doctors said that she was in a serious condition and might never fully return to the state from before the accident. The causes remain unclear, as whether the ramp was improperly designed, or was it mistake of the poor injured girl. Of course, the organizers don’t assume responsibility for the accident, as before jumping contestant signed declarations in which they assumed all the risk.
The accident, however, didn’t have any immediate results on the spectators, other contestants or organizers, which carried on with the show.
